Quinta da Fidalga or Quinta de Vale de Grou as it was called earlier is an old establishment which was founded in XIV-XV Century and has been historically associated with Paulo da Gama, the brother of the famous maritime adventurer. The farm had originally about 20 hectares with a beautiful garden, house and farm buildings, and it was hold by family members of da Gama till 2000-s when it was sold to Camara Municipal.
The earthquake of 1755 and followed tsunami have destroyed almost all buildings in Seixal including the original house of Quinta da Fidalga. Fortunately for us Quinta has restored its premises and gardens.
Now you can visit the garden with old beautiful trees, citrus garden and unique tidal pool with gorgeous wisteria paths around it. This is tranquil island of emerald greens just next to the boardwalk.
The garden had its connection to India as some objects and plants have been originally brought from India and China by its famous owner. According to the family myth there was a Cedar (Cedar do Goa) planted by Vasco da Gama himself. We have discovered some old Cedars in the garden, so may be this is not such a myth after all.
There is also an old stunning house, which architecture reminds “Gone with the winds” vibe. Most of the time the house is closed to the public, but sometimes you can visit exhibitions there and enjoy explore the insides of the building.
After nice walk around the park you can have a meal or a refreshing drink at Tapas do Rio, this is a nice place with a open terrace inside the garden.
